What is Severely Multiply Impaired?
From the Minnesota Department of Education: Severely multiply impaired (SMI) means a pupil who has severe learning and developmental problems resulting from two or more disability conditions.
The team shall determine that a pupil is eligible as being severely multiply impaired if the pupil meets the criteria for two or more of the following disabilities:
- deaf or hard of hearing
- physically impaired
- developmental cognitive disability: severe-profound range
- visually impaired
- emotional or behavioral disorders
- autism spectrum disorders
