June 1, 2022 — Pen pals are usually strangers whose relationship is based primarily, or even solely, on their exchange of letters. Second graders in Mara Drill’s class at Hilltop Primary School and in Debbie Loomis’ class at Shirley Hills Primary School were likely strangers at the beginning of the school year when they became pen pals. But after a year of getting to know each other via letters, the two classes got together to meet each other in person on May 31. And they’ve now become friends.
Students in each class have been writing to each other since September. This week the two classes walked from their respective schools to Grandview Middle School, where they had a chance to meet their pen pal in person and play together on the Grandview playground. Students had fun getting to know each other while they shared a juice box and snack together.
“It was a significant meeting because when these students get to fifth grade, they’ll meet each other again and may find themselves in classes together when they get to Grandview,” said Drill. “Many of these students have already forged a friendship through their letters.”
Loomis called the pen pal endeavor a success. “It was so successful that we hope to do it again next year,” she said. “We hope to see this project expand to other sections of second grade as well.”
