November 19, 2024 — Mound Westonka High School students in Sarah Morinville’s AP Physics class attended the STEM Goes Red Conference Nov. 18 at RSP Architects in Minneapolis. The 16 students participated in hands-on learning and mentoring with leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The event included five breakout sessions where students used AI in architecture, built robots, used VR to perform surgery, reviewed CPR, and (their favorite activity) engaged in speed mentoring with local leaders in STEM careers. Senior Matthew Mobagi won the design challenge by designing a robot of a wake surfer, winning a new iPad for his efforts.

“From the technology of e-commerce to the chemistry of cosmetics; from the way we communicate to the way we consume information – our daily lives are built on a STEM foundation,” read the introduction to the conference, which was put on by The American Heart Association. The conference brought over 100 students together from across the state to learn about STEM careers. The event also included networking opportunities for science and STEM teachers.

“I am incredibly proud of my MWHS students,” said Morinville. “They showed up as professionals and were eager to learn. They demonstrated what it means to be a White Hawk.”
