May 30, 2024 — A new greenhouse and gardening project at Hilltop Primary School this spring is designed to provide students with beneficial tools to help increase feelings of calm and relaxation. “Gardening and exploring outdoors helps to quiet the body’s nervous system, giving students a chance to increase their coping skills while in that environment,” said Hilltop social worker Lori Springer.

The project came about thanks to a grant from the Westonka District #277 Foundation, which provided funds for a six by eight-foot outdoor greenhouse structure, three raised garden beds, soil, plants and gardening tools. The greenhouse was assembled this spring by Mound Westonka High School junior June Montzka, who is working towards her Girl Scout Gold Award. Springer said, “June spent an entire weekend building the greenhouse and assembling the raised garden beds – we are so appreciative!”

Gardening teaches important skills like patience and resilience. The greenhouse project also promotes physical activity and provides a quality outdoor experience. Another benefit is encouraging students to try new foods and teaching the benefits of healthy food options.

The greenhouse was open for Hilltop families on May 18 during the school’s recent “Screen Free Week.” Students planted flowers, herbs and vegetables, which provided a variety of gardening options.

“We are so very grateful to the Westonka District #277 Foundation for the grant that made this project happen,” added Springer.
