June 4, 2020 — Seventh-grade graduation is a rite of passage, signifying the end of a student’s elementary education and the beginning of high school education. Armed with the knowledge and skills they acquired in middle school, Grandview Middle School seventh-graders are now ready to face the challenge of high school.
Even though the traditional celebration had to be adapted this year, Grandview counselors Jean Ann Thayer and Jessica Larson worked together with parent volunteers to make the seventh-grade graduation ceremony as special as possible.
At a drive through event on June 1, every student received a gift bag with gift card, treats and a “Class of 2025” face mask, all donated by parents and the school’s PTO. Students drove through the Grandview parking lot to applause, a wave from Wally the White Hawk and special words from their Morning Meeting teacher. Parent volunteers took tons of photos and then students and their families celebrated together with an online ceremony that included pictures, videos and a special guest star, former Minnesota Viking Greg Coleman.
“It was pretty awesome considering all the obstacles that got in the way,” said Grandview Principal Christy Zachow. “We will sure miss them!”
