February 20, 2025 — February is “I Love to Read Month” and students at Shirley Hills Primary School are celebrating in a variety of ways. Last week, a pair of authors visited the school to the delight of both students and teachers.
On February 11, students in kindergarten, first and second grade were enthralled with Minnesota author and illustrator Cori Doerrfeld. She shared the writing process, engaged students in creating a unique illustration, and read one of her most beloved books to the children.
“The children loved hearing from a successful author and illustrator and watching her create pictures in their midst,” said second grade teacher Debbie Loomis. “They especially enjoyed seeing her book ‘Rabbit Listened’ printed in several different languages, which Cori brought to display.”
On February 12, Megan Maynor met with third and fourth grade students. Technology specialist Katie Davis reported that students were equally engaged in hearing how Maynor has become a treasured Minnesota author. She talked about some of the books she has written and delved into the process of becoming an author.
Shirley Hills thanked the PTA for paying for this indelible experience and offered a special thank you to parent Caroline Suttle for being a liaison for both authors.
“Many children will never forget the day they got to hear from and meet an author,” said Loomis.
