September 14, 2023 — Student artists from Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools, as well as Grandview Middle School, participated in the annual art competition at the Minnesota State Fair this summer. Westonka Public Schools has historically had a high number of ribbon winners at the fair, and this year was no exception. Westonka students brought home dozens of ribbons, despite stiff competition from across the state.

Artworks that are of exceptional quality and/or innovative are chosen by district art teachers for the state exhibit. Each year, the art department enters dozens of pieces in a range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and even digital art. All the district’s art teachers were proud of their students’ success.

"This year Hilltoppers really showed off their creative skills at the State Fair elementary art competition,” said Klair Hans, Hilltop art teacher. “From weavings to landscapes and cardboard sculptures, our students won a variety of ribbons in many categories. It was another successful year for Westonka artists, and I couldn't be more proud!" If you didn't get to see your artwork at the fair, make sure to swing by Hilltop to view the bulletin board display.

“I loved participating in the State Fair again this year and seeing all the winners,” said Grandview art teacher Hannah Barth. “I am very proud of all my students and the effort they put into their work!”

Congratulations to all of this year's award-winning artists!
