Grandview Ranked Fifth 'Best Middle School' in State
October 18, 2021 - Westonka Public Schools is home to one of the top middle schools in Minnesota, according to a new ranking released this month by U.S. News & World Report. Grandview Middle School earned a No. 5 state ranking in the inaugural "Best Middle Schools" list.
Westonka Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Mark Femrite said that it comes as no surprise that Grandview is counted among the state's best middle schools. "When you walk inside Grandview Middle School, you see a school focused on students’ wellbeing, character development and academics," said Femrite. "The entire staff chose to work at GMS because they love middle school students. The staff’s love for this age group, and their expectation that all students learn at their highest ability, makes Grandview a stand-out among other middle schools across the state."
The 2022 Best K-8 Schools Rankings include data on more than 80,000 public elementary and middle schools across the United States. To determine the rankings, U.S. News used data from the U.S. Department of Education to analyze two areas at each school:
- Math and reading proficiency — or how well students perform on state assessments.
- Math and reading performance — or how well they perform compared with expectations.
The state assessment data used in the rankings is from the 2018-19 school year and, therefore, predate effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on test-taking.
In the 2022 Best Elementary Schools Rankings, Hilltop Primary School is ranked 21st out of 1,171 schools in the state, and Shirley Hills Primary School is ranked 73rd. The U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools Rankings are traditionally published in the spring.
