March 3, 2025 — Hilltop Primary students were treated to a performance by Opera for the Young (OFTY) on February 26. OFTY, a performance-based group that travels to schools to introduce children to the world of opera, presented a condensed version of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

In addition to the guest performers, 16 Hilltop fourth graders participated in the student chorus, after spending time at school and at home learning their music and lines ahead of time.

“The performers were enthusiastic to be here, and had amazing voices,” said second grade teacher Carmen Diamond. “I also thought the performance gave the kids an opportunity to practice all sorts of important skills, including how to behave during a performance, stamina, good listening, respect, and being aware of others around them.”

Diamond went on to praise the students’ behavior during the performance. She also thanked music teacher Theresa Schmidt for providing the opportunity for students to learn, grow, and have fun.

“It was a great experience to bring opera to our students and watch them learn about something new,” said Schmidt.
