November 13, 2024 — Students throughout the Westonka School District celebrated Veterans Day on Nov. 11, honoring all those who have served our country in war or peace.
At Hilltop Primary School, Principal Mike Moch welcomed 20 military veterans and their families to a student assembly. Students shared thank you cards, sang songs, shared a poem and hosted refreshments for the veterans. “Hilltop has hosted veterans for many years, and we love the tradition,” said Moch. “This time allows our students to recognize the service of others and know that many of our own students have connections to veterans. It was a great day!”
Each year, Hilltop’s third grade concert is based on honoring veterans. The full program will be held Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Westonka Performing Arts Center.
Shirley Hills Primary School students honored veterans during the school's Grandfriends’ Day celebration on Nov. 1. Classroom activities included discussions about what it means to be a veteran. Kindergartners watched a kid-friendly video, talked about what Veterans Day means, and completed a coloring page to remind students to talk to their parents about the veterans that they know.
At Grandview Middle School, teachers integrated Veterans Day into the curriculum through selected videos, readings, and discussions. Many students wrote letters of appreciation through Operation Gratitude. “Students learn what a veteran is, what Veterans Day celebrates, and why it is important that we celebrate and honor veterans who are alive and those who have died,” said Principal Christy Zachow.
In what has become an annual tradition, the Veterans Day Wall of Honor was assembled and displayed at Mound Westonka High School beginning in November. Students, staff, and parents were invited to submit stories of veterans in their families, which were hung as profile posters along the windows in the MWHS Student Commons.
“The wall has expanded so much that it now encompasses multiple walls, reaching from the cafeteria to the upper north – almost the length of the entire school,” said Student Senate advisor Emily Morrow. “We are grateful to honor so many veterans.”
