Update Your Family's Contact Information to Receive School Alerts
November 5, 2020 — At 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, Westonka Schools will be conducting a test of its parent notification system for weather-related building closings and delays.
Student safety is the district's No. 1 priority when making weather-related school closing decisions. Before deciding to close school buildings or delay school, Westonka Superintendent Kevin Borg consults the National Weather Service and other experts inside and outside the district.
When possible, decisions to close school will be made the afternoon or evening before based on predicted conditions and the following day will be a distance learning day for all students and staff. Decisions to dismiss school early will be made by noon. The automated voicemail is only one means the district uses to notify families of these decisions, but it is usually the first notification and it automatically generates an email as well.
The Skylert messaging system is set up to make calls to a primary phone number for food service and attendance announcements; a primary and secondary number for general and non-school hours emergency announcements; and three phone numbers for a school hours emergency message during the school day.
For many families, it will be most beneficial to have home and/or cell phones set as the primary and secondary numbers and a work phone set as the third number to be used during the school day.
Update Your Information
To make sure that you are receiving these calls at the correct phone numbers, please take the following steps (NOTE: Changes made after Saturday evening will not yet be active for Sunday’s test call):
- Log into Skyward Family Access with your username and password
- On the next screen, select "Skylert" from the left menu. You will see a page already populated with your family information. Please check all information for accuracy and make any necessary changes.
- NEW: Westonka Schools will be utilizing text messages for School Hours Emergency, Non-school Hours Emergency and General notifications this year (typically school closings, critical technology updates and other important announcements). If you would like to receive text messages from the school district, please make sure you input a mobile phone number in the Text Message Numbers field and check the box for the type(s) of text message you wish to receive from the district. Westonka Schools will send follow-up communication prior to sending the initial “Opt In” text message to families.
- After you have made any necessary changes on the Skylert tab, select "Save." You only need to do this once, even if you have more than one child in the district.
If you are a school parent and don't believe you received a test call Sunday evening, please email Carol Shukle at email@example.com.
