January 29, 2020 — In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in the spirit of giving back, Hilltop Primary School students packed 24,192 meals in only three hours Jan. 24 to combat world hunger. Hilltop has hosted Many Hands Many Meals (MHMM) of Excelsior for the past four years, packing over 100,000 meals for children in need around the world. This year’s meals are headed for Malawai, Africa.
Mound Westonka Rotarian Robin Pinegar has coordinated the project each year with the help of Principal Mike Moch, Hilltop teachers and staff, other Rotarians and staff from MHMM. In addition to helping at the actual event, the Rotary has also donated funds to cover a portion of the cost of the ingredients.
"It was an awesome and fun day," said Pinegar, who said she is the "lucky one” who coordinates over 30 community volunteers help each year to make the project a success. "It really takes a village," she said.
Principal Moch said this event is one of his favorites each year because of the hands-on experience and work the students get to do to support others. “This year we raised close to $4,000 to support the cause, which helped pay for the food to be packed and helped support the cost of shipping,” Moch added.
Many Hands Many Meals is a volunteer-driven organization in Excelsior committed to inspiring, engaging and educating people, starting with our children, by packaging life-saving meals that ease world hunger. For more information, visit their website.
