February 5, 2020 — For the past three years, Mound Westonka High School students have teamed up to make tie-blankets for Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN). Although the event was not technically on the docket this year, students from both Westonka DECA and National Honor Society decided to take on the project themselves.

Led by junior Avery Robbins, about 20 students representing both clubs got together Feb. 1 and made 25 blankets for WeCAN clients. The two clubs combined resources to purchase the necessary materials and students gathered on a weekend day to assemble the blankets.

Robbins delivered the blankets Feb. 4 to WeCAN Associate Director Sami Smetana, who was happy to receive them. “We are so grateful for the wonderful donation of warm blankets,” said Smetana. “It’s especially nice knowing that the students made this project a priority by hosting the event on a non-school day.”

WeCAN is a non-profit organization that serves low-income people in the Westonka and surrounding area. For more information, visit wecanmn.org.
