May 21, 2019 — The May 13 spring band concert at Mound Westonka High School gave director Gretchen Chilson an opportunity to acknowledge 17 seniors for their hard work and dedication to band. “Thank you for your leadership and dedication to our band program,” said Chilson. “Best wishes in your future endeavors!”
Chilson introduced the MWHS band seniors: Andrew Abegglen, Carsten Doepnerhove, Camille Hill, Ethan James, Lauren Kelly, Alex Kline, Megan Larson, Asha Martel, Tia Meyer, Thomas Miller, Samantha Osmek, Ellie Skogsberg, Allen Soley, Trevor Spurbeck, Alyson Sveeggen, Navin Thakurdial and Jasper Treat.
The annual senior awards were also distributed at the concert. Soley received the Outstanding Musician Award. The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for the outstanding senior jazz musician went to Spurbeck. The Patrick S. Gilmore Award was named to honor the legendary 19th-century bandmaster, Patrick Gilmore. This year’s award, which honors a senior student for musicianship and dedication, went to Hill.
Thakurdial received the John Philip Sousa Band Award, which recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication. The award has become a nationwide symbol of excellence in musical achievement and is so prestigious that each school is only allowed to recognize one student per year.
Band members were acknowledged for participation in all-state groups, several honor bands, and solo and ensemble contests. The members of the band council were acknowledged, as well as the students who lettered in band this year.
Also honored were eighth-grader Sam Burns, Most Improved Concert Band; junior Vivian Clark, Most Improved Symphonic Band; and sophomore Aly Schneider, Most Improved Wind Ensemble.
