A Season of Change for Westonka
Borg Report May 15, 2025
As we near the close of another fantastic school year, there’s a lot to celebrate across Westonka Public Schools. From the achievements of our students and staff to the exciting transformations on the horizon, this is a season of reflection and anticipation.
In recent news, I’m proud to share that Mound Westonka High School achieved an impressive 97.4% graduation rate in 2024–far surpassing the Minnesota state average of 84.2% and outpacing our neighboring districts. This achievement, along with many other indicators of success, is a testament to the dedication of our educators, the support of our school families, and a collective focus on student attendance, engagement, and academic excellence. Together, we’re preparing every Westonka student for success beyond graduation.
Looking ahead to the summer months, several important projects will begin that will help shape our district’s future. Please read below about the major construction projects at the middle and high schools designed to support, inspire and elevate the potential of every Westonka student.
In July, we will also be launching a new district website designed to enhance the user experience and make it easier for families, students, staff and community members to access important information. Additionally, effective July 1, our new school names will officially take effect: Grandview Middle School will become Westonka Middle School, and Mound Westonka High School will be known as Westonka High School. We believe these updates will bring needed consistency and create a sense of unity across our schools and community.
Summer 2025 Construction Updates
High School Tennis Court Project Enters Final Phase - Due to a cooler April, we are rescheduling the tennis court ribbon cutting originally planned for May 21. To begin final surfacing of the courts, contractors required two weeks with temperatures remaining above 50 degrees. That window finally arrived, and surfacing began this week. We anticipate that the courts will be playable by the end of June. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and support as we complete this exciting project. Stay tuned for details about a community pickleball introduction later this summer, as well as a formal ribbon-cutting with our high school tennis teams at the start of the fall 2025 season.
High School Redesign - Construction on the redesigned Westonka High School began in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by fall 2026. This transformative project will redesign nearly the entire school, optimizing spaces to better meet the needs of today’s students. This summer, we will begin the first three phases of construction, including the northwest addition and a remodel of that area’s academic wings. Look for additional construction updates in early August regarding the start of the 2025-26 school year.
Middle School Construction - The middle school construction project is scheduled to begin at the end of the school year and will finish in August. Construction work includes:
- Safety & Security: A new secure main entrance, enhanced lockdown capacity, and relocated main office.
- Facility Upgrades: New lockers, kitchen air handling unit, and water softener.
- Upgraded Spaces: A renovated media center, updated cafeteria, and a refreshed small gym.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and trust as we close out the 2024-25 school year. I look forward to all that we will accomplish together as we build the future of Westonka.
Sincerely,
