Have a Great Summer, Westonka!

Borg Report May 30, 2024

Wednesday was graduation and we had a perfect night on Haddorff Field. This is a very accomplished class and one that our whole community can be proud of. Congratulations, Class of 2024!

As we close out the 2023-24 school year, we’re gearing up for a very busy summer ahead with programming, planning, staff development, and the start of construction. I want to provide you with a brief update on what’s happening across our district these next few months.

Summer Bond Project Construction

We are excited to begin construction this month on security improvements at Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools and the Early Learning Center, as well as construction of 12 new tennis courts (with six of these courts also lined for pickleball) across Sunnyfield Road E from Mound Westonka High School. The district will also be completing maintenance to the bus garage this summer, paving the drive south of the transportation building and reorganizing the transportation lot. To follow along with summer 2024 bond construction, please visit www.westonka.k12.mn.us/bondprojects.

Early Learning, Hilltop and Shirley Hills Technology and Security Updates: Work is scheduled to begin the week of June 10 on the primary school security improvements. Summer 2024 work includes adding lockdown capacity, intrusion resistant glass, door alerts and notification lights. The school buildings will still be accessible during construction. Visitors should pay special attention to construction-related signage.

New High School Tennis Courts: Construction of 12 new tennis courts (with six courts also lined for pickleball) will begin mid-June and will continue throughout the fall. Site preparation for the new courts began over spring break. The current tennis courts will remain operational until the new courts are finished. Tennis court construction will wrap up in spring 2025. [Tennis court site plan]

Westonka Public Schools Brand Updates Coming Soon!

As a reminder, back in January, we launched a review of the Westonka Public Schools brand. As we take an important step forward with our facilities (thank you, Westonka!), we recognize the need to establish a strong and consistent brand identity that reflects our district’s vision, mission and goals and that helps identify Westonka's points of differentiation to ensure that we remain an attractive option for students and families.

Over the past several months, we completed a comprehensive brand audit and conducted extensive market research, which included stakeholder interviews, a focus group and community survey. We greatly appreciate the engagement from students, staff, parents and community members throughout the branding review process.

By next fall, we are excited to unveil a refreshed brand and graphic identity that are a reflection of how we live and what we believe in at Westonka. Make sure to watch for updates via email and social media this summer!

Emergency Response Training

Later this month, Westonka’s administrative team will sit down with Minnetrista Police, Orono Police, School Resources Officers and Mound Fire to review our emergency action plans. I am grateful for our collaboration with our first responders; these exercises ensure our team is prepared and organized in the event of an emergency.

Free Summer Meals Program

Our FREE summer meals program for all kids ages 18 and under begins June 10 at Hilltop Primary School. The free meal program will continue throughout the school year, with all students receiving up to two federally reimbursable meals (one breakfast and one lunch) per school day at no cost. Visit Westonka Foodies for more information about dates and times.

Now, Enjoy Your Summer!

In closing, I want to thank all of our Westonka families and staff for your support, dedication and partnership throughout the year. Your commitment to your child’s education and to our school community has truly made a difference in the lives of our students.

As we prepare to embark on a well-deserved summer break, I encourage you to take this time to relax, recharge and create cherished memories with your loved ones. Whether you're traveling to new destinations, exploring local attractions and activities, or simply enjoying the warmth of the sun in your own backyard, I hope this summer brings you joy, relaxation and rejuvenation.

As always, please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or comments about our schools.

Sincerely,

Kevin Borg, Superintendent
