District Facilities Review Process Continues Moving Forward

Borg Report January 19, 2023

As we approach the end of the second quarter, I want to continue to connect with parents, staff and the community on the progress of our facilities review.

In September, I shared that the School Board Facilities Committee spent much of the 2021-22 school year evaluating districtwide facilities needs and identifying areas of focus. To assist with this process, the district completed an updated demographic study (spring ‘22) to help project enrollment over the next 10 years and a community survey (August ‘22) to help the district to better understand the attitudes and opinions of residents of the Westonka School District.

Based off the community feedback we received and the demographics insight, we created staff focus groups (fall ‘22) surrounding the following topics:

  1. Facility maintenance
  2. Building/campus security
  3. Mound Westonka High School redesign focused on enhancing the learning environment and improving functionality, safety and pride
  4. Outdoor activity space improvements on the high school campus

The School Board Facilities Committee recently prioritized the feedback from these focus groups and would like to provide an opportunity for everyone to share their input on the top priorities. Over the next few months, I will be meeting with the Westonka community to present the facilities committee’s work and gather feedback. Our goal is to ensure that parents, staff and the community are all aligned with the direction we envision our facilities are headed. Meetings and discussions will be held as follows:

  • Westonka staff meetings (January-March)
  • Joint Parent Advisory Committee meeting (February)
  • Westonka Parent and Community Presentation (March)

Save the Date: March 14 Parent and Community Facilities Presentation

The community facilities presentation is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. at the Westonka Performing Arts Center. I encourage the entire Westonka community to join me for a presentation and discussion surrounding the future of Westonka’s facilities. More details and information regarding this presentation will be shared in a late February Borg Report.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Kevin Borg, Superintendent
