April 30 Superintendent's Update on COVID-19

Borg Report April 30, 2020

Dear Westonka Families,

As we start May and prepare to finish the school year through distance learning, we appreciate your cooperation in helping our students stay engaged with their classes. Spring fever begins to take effect in a traditional school setting and this year that will be more intense. We understand the difficulties this distance learning model presents our families and we are here to support you to help your child have a strong finish.

A few updates this week:

May 1 and 4 - The State has set Friday, May 1 and Monday, May 4 as Teacher Professional Days. Our staff will be engaged in planning to continue
distance learning for the remainder of the school year. For students, this is a great time to catch up on school work!

Locker Clean-Out Announcement - Each of the schools are planning opportunities to pick up school materials as well as personal items that were
left in lockers before spring break. Pick-ups at Shirley Hills, Hilltop and Grandview Middle School are set for Monday, May 4. The Mound Westonka
High School pick-up date will be announced later. Please check communications from your child’s school and the school website for details.

Be the Light - To honor our students, staff, community members and especially our MWHS 2020 senior class, Westonka
Schools is joining districts across the state and nation in the #BeTheLightMN movement. On Friday nights this spring, lights at Haddorff Field will flip on at 8:00 p.m. for 20 minutes and 20 seconds. Last Friday, April 24, we recognized the MWHS boys and girls golf teams that had their seasons
interrupted this year due to the threat of COVID-19. This week, on May 1 we will recognize boys tennis.

Spring Activities/Summer Programming - On April 23, the Minnesota State High School League canceled all sports and activities for the remainder of the school year, which means no spring sports seasons. Additionally, all Westonka Schools athletic fields, courts and playgrounds remain closed to the public during the governor’s stay-at-home order. We await direction from the state on what can be offered in the summer. As a district, we are preparing to run our programs so we can be ready once we are allowed to open. The Community Education Summer Catalog is now posted online.

Teacher Appreciation Week - National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4-8, 2020. I have enjoyed some of the social media comments
relating to our new “parent teachers” during this distance learning. You are to be commended for your tireless efforts in bringing the classroom into your homes.

I am also so incredibly impressed by our 178 teachers at Westonka. Their dedication to our students is remarkable. I encourage families to take a
minute and write a short email to a staff member who made a difference for your family. Their service to our families and students has shined bright this past month and I applaud their accomplishments.

School Lunch Hero Day, May 1 - Friday, May 1, is a day to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes
through the cafeteria. This year, this team has taken on the challenge to feed this community in a distance format, providing around 1,900 meals
on Wednesday. Their efforts truly have been remarkable and I could not be more proud of this team.

Local Businesses - Again, I want to thank all of you for frequenting our local businesses during this time. By patronizing our restaurants and stores,
they have been able to employ some of their staff and stay open. Please continue to keep them in mind when you shop and order take-out this
spring.

Regardless if our school campuses are physically open or closed, we will continue to care for our students in every way possible. Westonka’s teachers and staff have done an incredible job navigating this unprecedented time and making the best of a difficult situation.

We are also greatly appreciative of our students and parents, as they continue to demonstrate remarkable resolve.

Thank you, one again, for your partnership, patience and grace. Our schools are closed but our hearts are open. I am so thankful and proud to be part of the Westonka community.

Sincerely,

Kevin
