Borg Report November 6, 2019

I am pleased to report that Westonka School District residents approved a new 10-year operating levy on Nov. 5 in support of our students. The single ballot question was approved with 65 percent of the vote.

Additionally, Dave Botts, Kelle Bowe, Ralph Harrison and Heidi Marty were elected to four-year terms on the school board Tuesday. They will be sworn in at the January board meeting. I look forward to continuing to work closely with these returning board members in support of our district goals.

The new operating levy will provide 10 years of stable funding that will allow the district to avoid impactful reductions, stay competitive with our neighbors and accelerate progress in our award-winning schools, all while maintaining the lowest school property taxes in Hennepin County.

The levy’s tiered payment structure lessens the tax impact for residents by accessing funds only as they are needed by the district. The new levy will provide approximately $1 million in additional revenue for 2020, allowing Westonka to preserve class sizes, programming and student supports. The district will receive an additional $1 million in revenue in 2024, when enrollment is projected to plateau.

We are truly honored by the community's trust and continued support of our schools. This would not be possible without the exceptional educational experience provided by Westonka’s teachers, administrators and staff. I also wish to sincerely thank the parents and community members who work together with our staff to ensure safe, healthy, supportive and welcoming learning environments for all students.

The passage of any referendum results in higher community expectations. I know that together we will meet these expectations by continuing to provide the high-quality education that the Westonka community expects and deserves.

Thank you, Westonka!
