New Community Spaces a Highlight of 2018
Borg Report December 20, 2018
As we approach the end of 2018, I want to take a brief moment to reflect back on the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
The clear highlight of the fall was the opening of the new Westonka Performing Arts Center and Westonka Activity Center. In a short time, these facilities are already being enjoyed by so many people in our community, and we are extremely grateful to Westonka residents for passing the 2016 bond referendum and making these dreams a reality. The Westonka DECA project “ThankYouWestonka” has done a great job of showing appreciation for these new spaces.
Moving from a 200-seat lecture hall to the Westonka Performing Arts Center auditorium that seats 611 was a game-changer. A remarkable 1,805 people got to experience this year’s Mound Westonka High School fall musical in a professional performance space. For the first time in decades, we have a space worthy of our students and other high-caliber performers.
In addition to the musical, already this year the PAC has played host to several school musical ensembles, conferences, presentations, performances by professional musicians, and more. There are several events slated for the New Year, including a performance by renowned a cappella group Tonic Sol-fa in February (tickets on sale now at www.WestonkaPAC.com). If you haven’t already experienced a PAC event, what are you waiting for?
The Westonka Activity Center is also now in full operation, with an average of 192 people using the facility daily. We knew that we would need over 300 WAC memberships to cover operational expenses, and as of today we have sold 360 individual and family memberships, giving us a total of 1,000 members.
On any given day, you will see people using the WAC for fitness classes, cardio workouts, basketball, aquatics, pickleball, track workouts and more! With that said, there are still several gym slots available each week if your group is looking for a great place to practice or compete. Visit www.WestonkaActivityCenter.com for more information.
I wish you a well-deserved break with your families next week, and I look forward to seeing all that we can accomplish together in the New Year.
Sincerely,
