June 4, 2025 — Field days are an end-of-year ritual for many primary school students. Both Hilltop and Shirley Hills schools embraced the tradition and spent an entire day this week celebrating the end of the school year.

Shirley Hills students enjoyed a hot and sunny day for their Super Team Day on June 2. Phy ed specialist Mike Nielsen and a large group of volunteers put together an entire schedule of activities.

“It was a great day! The students played hard, enjoyed shopping at the Scholastic Book Fair, played black light mini golf, competed in wacky relays and enjoyed some freeze pops from the PTA,” said Dean of Students Beth Hausladen. “We are truly thankful for the many volunteers who helped make the day a success and the parents who came to cheer us all on!”

Hilltop students started their field day activities inside due to rain on June 3. But the relays, bouncy houses, games, and activities in the gym proved to be just as much fun. And the rain cleared out in time for the annual Tug-of-War to end the day outdoors.

“Rain or shine, Hilltop students had a blast on Field Day!” said phy ed teacher Brooke Berger. “Students participated in many events including track races, high jump, long jump, cardio drumming, bounce houses, parachute games, ping pong activities, and bingo.”

In a great finale to the day, the Tug-of-War tradition celebrated fourth grade teacher Craig Schmidt's retirement with his class taking home the victory!
