Hilltop Students Create Rubik's Cube Mosaic of School Mascot

Hilltop Second Graders Create Rubik's Cube Mosaic of School Mascot
Students created a mosaic of the White Hawks mascot with Rubik's cubes.

April 23, 2025 — Hilltop Primary School second graders completed hundreds of different Rubik's Cube puzzles before assembling all the cubes into a pair of mosaic portraits of the White Hawks mascot and the new Westonka Public Schools logo. The popular project, which started in 2013, is designed for whole grade level creative problem-solving.

Over the years, the project has varied from 75 cubes to several hundred cubes, depending on the availability of the cubes. In the beginning of the project, the school was able to access a Rubik’s Cube lending library to borrow the cubes, but the venue is now closed. Thanks to a grant from the Westonka District #277 Foundation, the school was able to purchase more cubes to create a bigger project.

Teachers access a mosaic builder website where you can upload a picture, and the website creates a grid and mosaic for you.

Each second grader started with a cube and a slip with a certain puzzle on it. Students must get their cube to match the pattern on the slip. Once they have completed their puzzle, they can start on another one. Several puzzle wizards completed multiple cubes until all the puzzles were done. Then students use a grid and guide to assemble the puzzles to complete the mosaic portraits.

The school greatly appreciated the grant from the Westonka Foundation, which allowed them to purchase their own cubes.
