January 29, 2025 — Shirley Hills Primary School students raised $20,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA) in January, having lots of fun and learning in the process.
“Once again, our Shirley Hills community showed their amazing generosity by supporting our American Heart Association fundraiser to the tune of $20,000!” said Principal Scott Eidsness. “Our students were determined to raise money and support AHA with their research and heart patient support...along with the opportunity to earn certain prizes.”
Fundraising for the Kids Heart Challenge was done online via the AHA website on a page set up for Shirley Hills. Features on the website provided opportunities for families to learn about heart health and complete hands-only CPR training. The website gave children information about lots of heroes, including Finn's story.
A total of 184 students registered on the AHA website, which allowed them to be entered into a drawing to be on the morning announcements with Principal Eidsness. Over 82 students completed Finn’s mission, which put them in the running to attend a Minnesota Twins game during the school day this spring. And 94 families learned hands-only CPR.
Second-grader Mya Johnson raised a total of $1,463.35 by creating some fun messages on social media and creating a slime event. Third-grader Lily Smith raised $1,100 in another fantastic effort. All students who raised over $100 will be invited to the Shirley Hills Campout this spring.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for supporting the mission of the AMA,” said Courtney Engel of the American Heart Association. “It has been truly inspiring to witness the generosity and dedication of your community – thank you for opening your hearts!”
Engel offered a special thank you to Principal Eidsness and Leslie Smith, administrative assistant, for their “exceptional leadership and tireless efforts” in making the Kids Heart Challenge an extraordinary experience for everyone. “Together, you’ve made a remarkable impact!” she added.
