January 12, 2024 — A group of 24 Grandview Middle School students attended CreativeCon at the University of Minnesota on January 9. They had the opportunity to meet and learn from visual and performing artists, explorers, innovators, scientists, and other people who celebrate creativity in their lives.

Laurie Bonier and Brenda Hoogeveen accompanied the students to the event, which provided a brain-on, hands-on day for young learners. This event was designed to challenge students’ creativity, strengthen their problem-solving skills, and ignite their imagination during three breakout sessions following a dynamic opening performance by Cypher Side Dance.

Breakout sessions included museum curating, watercolor bingo, break dancing, immersive theater, a study in architecture, origami, hand bells, wool art, and more.

At CreativeCon, students learn that creativity is a skill that can be practiced and strengthened; that creativity is necessary for higher education and all careers, and that creativity is an essential part of problem-solving. The event aligns with Minnesota Academic Standards in Arts Education.
