November 20, 2024 — Staff Appreciation Week was held at Mound Westonka High School the week of Nov. 11, when students found multiple ways to thank their favorite teachers and staff members. The annual event is held in conjunction with American Education Week. Organized by Student Senate, the week’s activities were designed to make each MWHS staff member feel special.
“Student leaders through MWHS Student Senate eagerly planned for and carried out many moments expressing gratitude to our staff throughout the week,” said Principal Jolene Herfel.
On Monday morning, the Senate hosted a morning coffee cart, sponsored by Caribou Coffee in Mound, where staff members were invited to help themselves to coffee and breakfast items. Tuesday and Wednesday were all about social media shout-outs – selfies and Tik-Toks with staff members. Students also filled out shout-out cards at lunch to show their appreciation for staff members who have impacted their lives. On Thursday, students were encouraged to share a fist bump or high five with staff members.
Students dressed up as their favorite staff members on Friday, which was a big hit! Senate members gave out handwritten cards to show their deep appreciation and respect to the staff in the building, including teachers, custodians, administration, paras, food services staff, and more. On Friday, the snack cart was filled with goodies for all staff members to enjoy.
“It was a great week, and I heard from many staff members how much they appreciated the kind gestures from students,” said Senate Advisor Emily Morrow, who extended a special “shout-out” to senior Emma Carlson and her committee for leading the effort.
“We have a dedicated staff committed to creating the best high school experience we can offer, and it is wonderful when students pause to express their recognition and appreciation for the work our staff does day in and day out,” Herfel added.
