November 12, 2024 — Over 200 Grandview Middle School seventh-grade students, along with staff and parent chaperones, put their math and science skills to work at Math Day at the Minnesota Zoo on Nov. 5. Using a workbook designed for the occasion, students used graphing, math, maps, and more to learn about zoo animals and their habitats.
Math Day is designed to inspire students to learn more about how math is applied in the zoo workplace and to the world beyond, where animals live in their natural habitats. At both professional and student-led activity stations, students solved grade-appropriate math and science problems related to a wide variety of animal issues, exhibit upkeep and everyday life at the zoo.
The students traveled in groups through various stations, where they answered specific questions about the exhibits or animals in the exhibit which related to all their core classes. Students exercised their critical thinking and problem-solving skills outside the classroom in real-life situations.
