October 31, 2024 — Westonka Public Schools students and staff embraced the spirit of the season with creative costumes, exciting activities, and plenty of spooky fun!
Fully costumed for Halloween, members of the Mound Westonka High School Wind Ensemble performed a series of short Halloween concerts on Oct. 31 at Grandview Middle School and at Shirley Hills and Hilltop primary schools. The band also performed for the residents at Harrison Bay Senior Living in Mound.
The ensemble played a variety of spooky soundtracks, and each instrument group also performed a small group selection to provide a demonstration of each instrument. While the annual mini-concerts are fun for all, they also provide a great opportunity to share music with younger students and encourage their participation in band. Each group of musicians was enthusiastically greeted by the younger students.
“We braved the rain and the snow, but had great audiences at each venue,” said band director Gretchen Chilson.
Grandview Middle School students celebrated fall with the annual PTO sponsored Halloween/Fall Fiesta on October 25. The event included multiple activities going on simultaneously to incorporate some of the students’ favorite fall activities. In addition to traditional favorites like dodgeball, gaga ball and nine-square, the event featured some favorite Halloween traditions like a "Creepy Classroom," costume contest, creepy kitchen, fortune-telling, dance-along, karaoke, and piles of candy.
Other fall-themed fun like crafts, carnival games, and more ensured that every student found something to enjoy! Principal Christy Zachow expressed her appreciation for the volunteers and donors who made the event possible.
At Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools, students dressed in costumes, participated in Halloween parades, and did fall-themed art and classroom projects. Hilltop third and fourth grade students also embraced the weather at a fall skating event at Thaler Arena as part of their celebration.
