November 16, 2023 — Over 100 community residents turned out to celebrate National Community Education Day at a free event at the Westonka Activity Center (WAC) on November 11. Westonka Community Education was also celebrating 45 years of service.

“It has been our privilege to provide learning opportunities to Westonka for the last 45 years,” said Scott Lhotka, director of Westonka Community Education and Services. “Our mission is to promote citizen involvement and provide lifelong learning opportunities to all citizens in Westonka.”

Lhotka appreciated the “nice turn out” of community members and families who came to explore what Westonka Community Education offers. During this event, Community Ed showcased a variety of different offerings for all ages, including adult activities like yoga, and Pilates Fusion. Activities that showcased youth enrichment and recreational activities, like a youth Kidcreate art class, youth rec basketball, and youth soccer, were featured, as well as family activities like open gym, an introduction to family pickleball, and a family swim.

Community members stopped by the Community Education display to learn more about the many programs Westonka Community Education and Service offers, including upcoming classes in the early learning and family education programs, and the adult programs offered at the WAC.

Community Education plays a vital role in creating a healthy and vibrant community. Individual and family lives are enhanced through programs and activities that not only educate, but entertain, motivate, and rejuvenate.

“We have been excited to be part of lifelong-learning in Westonka for the last 45 years and look forward to enriching the lives of community members for many more years to come,” said Lhotka.
