November 8, 2023 — Over 600 special guests attended Grandfriends’ Day at Shirley Hills Primary School on Nov. 3. Grandfriends’ Day is a long-standing and popular Shirley Hills tradition. The event is called “Grandfriends’ Day” to encourage students to invite a friend or neighbor if their grandparents live far away or are not able to attend the event geared at the youngsters’ older friends. This event is always one of the highlights of the year for Shirley Hills students, staff and families.

“Grandfriends’ Day was another amazing day at Shirley Hills,” said Principal Scott Eidsness. “We are so fortunate to have a community that loves our school the way Westonka loves Shirley Hills.”

The well-orchestrated schedule included wonderful grade-level vocal concerts, which showcased the talents of the Shirley Hills students. Grandparents and special guests had the opportunity to visit the classrooms to see what their students were learning and participate in some special projects. They also had the chance to take part in a book fair in the media center.

“Music teacher Melissa Bray always does an amazing job having five concerts in one day, and our students always perform so well for their special audience,” said Eidsness.

“Lastly, and importantly, guests bring their children to our book fair to purchase books to add to their in-home collection,” Eidsness added. “All proceeds go right back to our media center to help us order our books for the library.”

Students and staff also take the opportunity to honor the veterans in attendance as Grandfriends’ Day always occurs close to Veterans Day.

“Grandfriends’ Day is a wonderful and important day for Shirley Hills and our families,” said Eidsness.
