March 16, 2023 — Following a heavy schedule of rehearsals and performances in January and February, Mound Westonka High School band director Gretchen Chilson took Symphonic Band members on a fun one-day local tour on March 9. The day started with performances at Grandview Middle School and Shirley Hills and Hilltop primary schools.

"This field trip is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Symphonic Band to the other schools in the district and inspire our younger students in their own music-making,” said Chilson.

Following the morning performances, the band members visited Landmark Center and the Schubert Club in St. Paul, where they toured the Music Instrument Museum. A stop at the Mall of America provided team building activities like mini golf and Fly Over America.

The group also participated in a volunteer event by packing meals at Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen. The nutrition-packed meals are sent to hungry children around the world.

The band students wrapped up a full day of activities with a trip to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres for dinner and a performance of the musical “The Prom.”

“In addition to the performances, it's also a day for students to relax and spend time together after a very busy January and February, which included three concerts, three pep band games and more,” said Chilson. “At each of our destinations, these students represented MWHS well and made me so proud!"
