January 19, 2023 — Mound Westonka High School paraprofessional Oscar Johnson has been named the January 2023 recipient of the Westonka Way Award. The monthly award celebrates non-licensed Westonka Public Schools staff members who go above and beyond for families, students and other staff—because that's the Westonka Way!

Johnson has served as a special education paraprofessional at Mound Westonka High School since January 2021. His MWHS colleagues describe him as a “go-getter” who takes initiative and jumps in to help whenever and wherever he’s needed. 

“I am not sure what we would do without Oscar,” wrote one nominator. “He makes such genuine connections with ALL students in special education, no matter the disability or age.”

“He has a way of engaging students in a way I've never seen before,” the nominator added. “He has incredible patience, a great work ethic and a true desire to help students.”

Another nominator wrote: “Oscar is as dependable and respectful as they come. His professional, yet personal, approach to every task is so refreshing. I wish we could have 10 more Oscars in our building!”

On Thursday morning, Superintendent Kevin Borg was joined by Director of Special Services Emily Rustman to present Johnson with a special plaque and two gift certificates for the Al & Alma’s Signature Sunday Brunch Cruise on Lake Minnetonka.
