November 17, 2022 — Students throughout the Westonka School District celebrated Veterans Day on Nov. 11, honoring all those who have served our country in war or peace.
At Hilltop Primary School, Principal Mike Moch welcomed invited veteran guests to a student assembly. The Hilltop student council, composed of third and fourth graders, shared the definition of "veteran" along with a brief history of the holiday. The third graders presented a slideshow of family veterans while they sang patriotic songs.
The Golden Awards were handed out to Hilltop classrooms that showed exemplary behavior at recess, in the hallways, and in keeping their lunchroom and classroom clean. The assembly concluded with another song, sung by the Hilltop fourth graders, as the school wrapped up the November character trait: gratitude. Hilltop third graders will be presenting their entire Veterans Day program on November 29 at 7 p.m. at the Westonka Performing Arts Center.
Shirley Hills Primary School students honored veterans during their Grandfriends’ Day on Nov. 4. Kindergartners watched a video about Veterans Day on November 11 and completed a coloring page so they could have a discussion with their families about the veterans in their lives.
At Grandview Middle School, teachers integrated Veterans Day into the curriculum through selected videos, readings and discussions. “Students learn what a veteran is, what Veterans Day celebrates, and why it is important that we celebrate and honor veterans who are alive and those who have died,” said Principal Christy Zachow.
In what has become an annual tradition, the Veterans Day Wall of Honor was assembled and displayed at Mound Westonka High School in November. Students, staff and parents were invited to submit stories of veterans in their families, which were hung as profile posters along the windows in the MWHS Student Commons. The wall now includes over 86 profiles, including six new ones added this year.
“Seeing new submissions each year is very rewarding, and to see staff, students and people from our community wanting to showcase their family and friends is truly fantastic,” said Student Senate advisor Jamie Harms. “Working on this project from year to year is incredibly humbling.”
