September 10, 2020 — Members of the Mound Westonka High School band kicked off the school year with a special event at Harrison Bay Senior Living on August 28. Outreach activities like the Porch Concerts and personal performance videos with elder care facilities last spring received such favorable feedback that the band program decided to continue the activities this year with a theme of “Bridge to the Community.”

About 50 band members and family members drew chalk murals in the parking lot of the senior living facility. The drumline, who had participated in a percussion camp the previous week, also performed as residents of the facility watched from their windows.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the relationship of the band to the community,” said Julie Maruska, Director of Marketing at Harrison Bay. “Residents enjoyed walking through the murals later in the day as well.”

With many people feeling isolated during this pandemic, the band is looking for creative ways to share their music. “The event at Harrison Bay was a great kick-off event to start our year,” said band director Gretchen Chilson.
