February 12, 2020 — Westonka Community Theatre’s Children’s Playhouse presented its very first production Feb. 7 and 8 in the Little Theater at Mound Westonka High School. “The Phantom in the Music Room,” a humorous, melodramatic, modern-day mystery written by Janet Gardner, was rehearsed and performed in just one week by 38 students from the area in grades 1 through 8.

The production was led by Melissa Bray as music director, Heidi Richardson-Duggan as artistic director and stage manager, Tirish Dirks as production manager and Jen Trundle as choreographer.

“It was great to see students’ growth in just one short week of rehearsals,” said Bray. “The audience was very supportive and included people who didn’t even have children in the show!”

Bray said the Little Theater was the “perfect size” venue for this number of participants and audience members. “It was fun to see students from various schools in the district working on a show together,” she added. “I especially loved hearing them sing as a group!”

Coming up next, WCT is proud to announce its 2020 summer production, “The Wizard of Oz.” The musical based on the beloved 1939 film and L. Frank Baum’s classic novel features a cast of whimsical characters who will appeal to audiences of all ages. The show will be performed July 23-26, 2020 at the Westonka PAC. Auditions will be held in May and are open to community members of every age. More information about opportunities to participate both on and off stage will be available in the Community Education Summer Catalog and on the Westonka Community Theatre website.
