Shirley Hills Recognized for Achieving Positive Student Outcomes
May 30, 2019 — Shirley Hills Primary School has been recognized for achieving Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Sustaining Exemplar status through the Minnesota Department of Education. Shirley Hills was one of only 71 schools in the state recognized this year for completing PBIS implementation and continuing to achieve positive student outcomes.
"This is a great accomplishment for Shirley Hills and demonstrates the school's dedication to student wellbeing and academic success," said Westonka Public Schools Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Mark Femrite. "Shirley Hills has become an exemplar school for others to look to by providing an exceptional and affirming learning environment."
PBIS is an approach where schools use evidence-based practices to enhance academic and social outcomes for all students. It helps establish clear expectations, common language and practices, and systems of positive feedback to help develop a strong school community.
Both Westonka primary schools - Shirley Hills and Hilltop - joined the Minnesota PBIS cohort in 2016 and have seen measured improvement in student behavior since the PBIS was introduced. Grandview Middle School will begin using the PBIS framework next school year.
To be identified as a Sustaining Exemplar PBIS School, a school needs to have completed training and demonstrate continued implementation of school-wide PBIS with fidelity. Shirley Hills staff will receive a certificate of recognition for their Sustaining Exemplar status during the Minnesota PBIS Summer Institute June 11-12 in Roseville.
