March 13, 2019 — Mound Westonka High School band director Gretchen Chilson took Symphonic Band members on a fun one-day local tour on March 5. The day started with performances at Grandview Middle School and Shirley Hills and Hilltop primary schools, followed by a visit to Lake Minnetonka Shores.
Following the morning performances, the band members had lunch at Anita’s Café in St. Paul’s historic Landmark Center and visited the Schubert Club Music Instrument Museum. A Wabasha Street caves tour told students the story of these natural caves that were made into a dinner/jazz club during the 1930s. Many gangster and ghost stories are also linked to these caves.
Students enjoyed mini-golf and the FlyOver America ride at Mall of America before heading to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater for dinner and a performance of the musical “Mamma Mia” to wrap up a full day of activities.
“This was a new experience for Symphonic Band,” said Chilson. “This year's ensemble is particularly strong, and it was fun to spend a day celebrating with them after a February that was full of performances!”
