DECA Spearheads 'Thank You Westonka' Events

Mound Talks 2018

January 10, 2019 — In May of 2016, Westonka School District voters approved $22.95 million in bond funding for the purposes of building a 600-seat auditorium and a community athletics and recreation center on the high school campus. Now that the Westonka Performing Arts Center and Westonka Activity Center are open and being enjoyed by residents of all ages, Mound Westonka High School DECA is on a mission to say thanks.

To help illustrate the student body's appreciation for Westonka's new facilities, MWHS junior Chloe Kantola and seniors Asha Martel and Grace Elling created this year's DECA Chapter project, Thank You Westonka. Using a Twitter page (@thankuwestonka) and the #ThankYouWestonka hashtag, the group regularly shares snapshots of gratitude for the dream-come-true spaces. The students have also been posting weekly blog entries at, which focus on activities taking place in the WAC and PAC and include behind-the-scenes information that the public may find interesting.

The MWHS DECA group is also hosting a series of "Thank You Westonka" events this year. On Jan. 25, the group will host its second free movie night in the PAC, featuring "The Greatest Showman." The only cost to the public is for treats, which will be sold at intermission for $1 apiece. Moviegoers who bring in an item to donate to WeCAN will receive one free treat.

The following day, Jan. 26, the group will be hosting Westonka's first Walk-A-Thon on the indoor track in the WAC. Participants are encouraged to collect at least $10 in pledges, in the form of a flat donation or donation per lap. All proceeds from this event will be given to the Westonka Food Shelf.
