December 29, 2020 — A new knitting club attracted over 50 Grandview Middle School fifth-graders to multiple Zoom sessions this fall. Led by Grandview staffers Jessica Larson and Heidi Knudsen, the club was started on Friday afternoons in an attempt to create some peer connections during distance learning.
Larson reached out to the Jeremiah Program in Minneapolis, which serves single mothers and their children, to see if they would be interested in having the students make some hats for their clients, and they gladly accepted the offer.
The kids were excited to have an outlet for their project, according to Knudsen. "They even wrote notes to go along with the hats," Knudsen said.
The project was funded with the help of the Grandview PTO.
About Jeremiah Program
Jeremiah Program works to disrupt the cycle of poverty for single mothers and their children, two generations at a time. Education and housing stability are key levers at the heart of the Jeremiah Program model. Jeremiah Program operates with the understanding that the pervasive and systemic impacts of poverty do not end, but can be disrupted by stable housing combined with post-secondary education for single mothers and a strong early education for their children. Founded in Minneapolis in 1998, Jeremiah Program has expanded programming to six communities across the nation: Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Brooklyn, NY; Fargo, ND; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; and Rochester-Southeast, MN.
