An Update on COVID-19

February 27, 2020

Dear Westonka Staff and Families,

As I noted in my February 7, 2020 health update, Westonka Public Schools has received questions about the district’s plans and procedures surrounding the novel (new) coronavirus disease, now called COVID-19. We continue to be in close contact with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), which receives regular updates from the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on this evolving public health situation.

MDH has dedicated a section of its website to Information for Schools on COVID-19 which includes useful information for staff, parents and students: https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools.html

At this time, the risk of becoming sick with COVID-19 is low, including for people in Minnesota schools. MDH is not currently recommending any changes to Westonka’s normal school operations or schedule. Should the need arise in the future, the district has procedures in place to offer online education for a period of time.

As always, it is highly recommended that people stay home when sick, cover their cough, and practice good hand hygiene. These recommendations are especially important during cold and flu season. Parents, please follow the School Guidelines for Keeping Young Children Home Due to Illness.

We will inform staff and families if MDH recommends any changes to our district’s current health procedures. If you have specific health-related questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Kelly Mattson, District Nurse
