Westonka Seeks Director of Community Education and Services
Westonka Community Education and Services Director Joel Dahl has announced his departure from Westonka Public Schools effective June 30, 2022. The position is now posted online. The job posting will be open through June 16, and interviews will be held June 22. The district hopes to have the new director in place by mid-July.

MWHS Choirs Present Annual Awards
The Mound Westonka High School choirs hosted their annual spring concert on May 16 at the Westonka Performing Arts Center. In addition to inspired performances by the school’s three choral groups, annual awards were presented to the school’s top vocal musicians and the 2022 graduating seniors were recognized.

Westonka Transition Plus Hosts 5K Event
The Westonka Public Schools Transition Plus (T+) Program hosted a 5K for other transition programs in the area on May 20. About 80 participants took part in adaptive activities in the grassy area in the middle of the high school track. Bleachers were set up for students and staff to take breaks. And Westonka’s T+ Program provided prizes for participants at the end of the event. “It was a great showcase of our T+ Program, as well as the students and staff within it, and a great time to shine our leadership in the community,” said Dr. Emily Rustman, Director of Special Services.

Former Westonka Educator Pens Children's Book
After recently retiring from a 33-year teaching career in Westonka Public Schools, Leigh Ann Kaminski has added a new title to her resume – children’s book author. During her tenure at Westonka, Kaminski taught special education at the high school, first grade at Hilltop Primary School and fifth grade language arts at Grandview Middle School. A year after her retirement, during the pandemic and with the encouragement of her family, Kaminski wrote "Pete the Peacock."

Westonka Introduces Next High School Principal
Westonka Public Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Jolene Herfel as the next principal of Mound Westonka High School. Herfel currently serves as assistant principal of St. Michael-Albertville High School, a position she has held since 2011. “I am excited and honored to be chosen to lead the exceptional students and staff at Mound Westonka High School,” Herfel said. “I am confident that my professional leadership and strengths will complement the existing culture, deepen our partnerships with the community, and challenge the school to become even stronger.”

MWHS Seniors Receive $392K in Scholarships
Mound Westonka High School hosted the annual Scholarship Awards Night on May 19, when 78 scholarships worth over a staggering $392,000 in scholarship money from 44 different donors were awarded to 64 members of the 2022 graduating class. Students and their families gathered in the Westonka Performing Arts Center to accept their scholarships, which came from both the local community and from donors across the country.

MWHS Honors 2022 Senior Athletes
Each year, Mound Westonka High School celebrates standout athletes from the graduating class. This year’s celebration took place on May 19 in the Little Theater, with student-athletes and their parents in attendance. Included in this year’s recognition are the Yost-Haddorff-Leopold and Athena Award nominees and winners, as well as senior three-season athletes, declared college athletes and state tournament participants.

Mound Westonka High School hosted the largest crowd ever of parents and leaders at the annual Link Leader Appreciation Breakfast on May 5. A total of 117 junior and senior Link Crew leaders were joined by over 130 parents for the celebration.

King Seth, Queen Lauren Crowned at MWHS Prom
Mound Westonka High School juniors and seniors were “On Cloud 9” for Prom 2022 on Saturday, May 7. Student Senate worked for months designing, painting, crafting and building a set to transform the MWHS gym into a dreamlike setting. Families, friends and students gathered on Friday to kick off the prom events with coronation, which brought the crowning of Prom King Seth Worden and Prom Queen Lauren Nash.

Westonka Staff Gather for Celebration
Excitement was in the air May 6 when Westonka Public Schools staff and community members gathered in the Westonka Performing Arts Center for the first in-person staff recognition event since the spring of 2019. The morning’s program honored staff who had reached years of service milestones, the building and Westonka Teachers of the Year, the winner of the Ann Bremer White Hawks Award for community volunteers, and the district’s 2021-22 retirees.

Auditions Set for Westonka Community Theatre's 'Beauty and the Beast'
Calling all actors, musicians and theatre enthusiasts! The Westonka Community Theatre is looking for community members (ages 8 to 108 - with all abilities welcome) for its third production, "Beauty and the Beast," at the Westonka Performing Art Center. "Beauty and the Beast" is family entertainment at its best. Auditions will be held Friday, May 20, 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Grandview Middle School.

Westonka DECA Students Earn Top Honors at Internationals
Mound Westonka High School sent 30 students to the 2022 DECA International Career Development Conference April 23-26 in Atlanta, where they competed against 22,000 business and marketing students. Seniors Blake Lee and Anna Reier were awarded first place for their Integrated Marketing Campaign - Service and took home an elusive glass trophy.

Shirley Hills Carnival is Huge Success
The Shirley Hills Primary School Spring Carnival on April 22 was an overwhelming success, raising over $30,000—the most money raised in the history of the event. Record-breaking presales on tickets contributed to the fundraiser, while kids were just glad to be able to participate in-person again at a time-honored school tradition.
