Filing for 2021 Westonka School Board Election Open July 27-Aug. 10
Filing to be a candidate for school board in the November 2021 Westonka school board election will open in late July and run for two weeks. The first day to file will be Tuesday, July 27 at the Westonka Educational Service Center (district offices). Filing will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10.

Shirley Hills Fourth-Graders Share Outdoor Adventures
In lieu of the annual Wolf Ridge trip, fourth-graders from Shirley Hills Primary engaged in a week of Outdoor Adventures May 10 through May 14. Students spent three days at Voyageur Camp in Mound, spent a day with naturalists from Three Rivers Park District and wrapped up the week with an outdoor talent show.

MWHS Link Crew Celebrates Memorable Year
The school year started out a little differently than a traditional Link Crew school experience for both the leaders and eighth-graders this year. The leaders were selected after the school year began in September, so Link Crew started out “hybrid” just like the school year. But they evolved throughout the year and were still able to provide eighth-graders with a high school experience they'll never forget.

Shirley Hills Raises Funds for Leukemia Society
This year Shirley Hills Primary School students and families raised over $9,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, their second highest total ever. As a reward for their efforts, Principal Scott Eidsness spent the night of May 21 on the school roof, while top fundraising students and families joined the campout on the school grounds.

Hilltop Readers Rewarded with Pancake Breakfast
Each year, Hilltop Primary School celebrates students who reach their reading goals with a pancake breakfast put on by Scotty B’s Restaurant. Following a successful drive-by event last year that was prompted by the pandemic restrictions, Scotty again welcomed students to his restaurant on May 14, when Principal Mike Moch and Hilltop teachers served students a pancake breakfast to-go, along with medals and trophies for reading.

Effective Friday, May 21, 2021, all negative balance meal accounts must be paid in full and remain with a positive balance until the end of the school year.

Senior Choir Performers Awarded
The Mound Westonka High School choirs were able to perform at the Performing Arts Center on May 17 for the first time in 14 months. The spring concert was titled “Return to Music,” which explored beautiful repertoire composed by living, modern composers.

MWHS Seniors Receive $309K in Scholarships
Mound Westonka High School hosted the annual Scholarship Awards Night on May 19, when 68 scholarships worth over $309,000 in scholarship money from 43 different donors were awarded to 60 members of the 2021 graduating class. Students and their families gathered in the Westonka Performing Arts Center to accept their scholarships, which came from both the local community and from donors across the country.

MWHS Honors Senior Athletes
Each year, Mound Westonka High School celebrates standout athletes from the graduating class. This year’s celebration took place on May 20 in the Little Theater, with student athletes and their parents in attendance. Included in this year’s recognition are the Yost-Haddorff-Leopold and Athena Award nominees and winners, as well as senior three-season athletes, declared college athletes and state tournament participants.

MWHS Arts and Academics Award Winners Honored
Each year, the Westonka School Board recognizes students from all grade levels at the May board meeting for their achievements in arts and academics. Although the personal recognition was not possible this year, the School Board and the district still want to recognize these students for their outstanding accomplishments. This week’s recognition focuses on Mound Westonka High School students.

MWHS Seniors Place Third in State in Stock Market Game
Four senior Mound Westonka High School Advanced Economics students took third place in the spring 2021 Stock Market Game, sponsored by Allianz. Max Altman, Charlie Herder, Santi Phommahaxey and Rocco Zucaro amassed over $23,000 in profits in a span of 12 weeks, competing against over 300 other high school teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin in the online investment simulation.

MWHS Bands Present Senior Awards
The Mound Westonka High School bands performed their annual spring concert on May 10 on the Westonka Performing Arts Center stage. Not only did it represent the first time they’ve played together on stage this year, it marked one of the few times they’ve even played together all year. The traditional senior awards were also presented during the concert.

School Board Recognizes Primary School Achievers
One of the highlights of the year for the Westonka School Board is recognizing students from all grade levels at the May board meeting for their achievements in arts and academics. Although the recognition will not take place in person this year, the students will receive a certificate for their outstanding accomplishments. At Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools, students earned awards in Continental Math League, Word Masters and Destination Imagination.

Pfizer Vaccine Appointments Available for Ages 12+
The FDA and CDC have authorized Pfizer/BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds. Parents in Minnesota are now able to make appointments for their child’s vaccination at locations where the Pfizer vaccine is available.

Students Celebrate Westonka Foodies
Westonka students celebrated some of their favorite staff members last week – the Westonka Foodies! School Lunch Hero Day on May 7 is a national celebration in honor of the hard-working individuals who prepare healthy meals for our students every single day. At Westonka, the celebration lasted all week as students recognized the Foodies in a variety of ways.

Westonka PAC to Host AP Art & Design Show
Art is back at the Westonka Performing Arts Center. During the month of May, the PAC will feature the artwork of Mound Westonka High School AP Art students. The public is invited to view the art and meet the artists at a reception at the PAC on Tuesday, May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Westonka Community Theatre Announces Auditions for 'The Wizard of Oz'
After a one-year delay, Westonka Community Theatre will step out on the yellow brick road with auditions for its summer production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Auditions will take place May 21 and 22 at Grandview Middle School. There will be a meeting May 23 for musicians interested in being part of the orchestra.

White Hawks Girls Golf Coach Pam Garvais Retires After 32 Years
Enthusiastic. Problem-solver. Excellent communicator. Dedicated leader. Ardent advocate. Passionate. Influential. These are just a few of the words used by her colleagues to describe long-time Mound Westonka High School girls’ golf coach Pam Garvais. After a coaching career that began in 1988, Garvais officially put away her clubs this season, at least as far as coaching is concerned.

According to one definition, a teacher is one who inspires, guides, enlightens and motivates, making the world a better place. Teacher Appreciation Week is designated during the first week of May as a time to honor the individuals who lend their passion and skills to education. At Westonka, each school celebrated their special teachers and staff members in their own unique way.

Logan Leonard Named Outstanding Male Athlete
This year’s Yost-Haddorff-Leopold Award winner is senior Logan Leonard. The other nominees for Mound Westonka High School's 69th annual outstanding male athlete award were Tucker Anderly, Trenton Bowe, Jack Linder, Charles Herder and Mitchell Krebsbach. Leonard, along with the other senior athletes, will be honored at a May 20 Senior Athletic Recognition Banquet.
