    Westonka Names 2024-25 Building Teachers of the Year

    Superintendent Kevin Borg and Westonka Education Minnesota representative Jack Boland surprised five Westonka Public Schools educators Wednesday with their respective school’s top teaching award. Congratulations to Westonka’s 2024-25 building Teachers of the Year: Wendy Richards from Mound Westonka High School, Libby Ackerson from Grandview Middle School, Sarah Wright from Shirley Hills Primary School, Alyssa Kanive from Hilltop Primary School and Lindsai Djerf from Westonka Early Learning.

    Staff Appreciation Week was held at Mound Westonka High School the week of Nov. 11, when students found multiple ways to thank their favorite teachers and staff members. The annual event is held in conjunction with American Education Week. Organized by Student Senate, the week’s activities were designed to make each MWHS staff member feel special.

    AP Physics Students Explore STEM Opportunities at Conference

    Mound Westonka High School students in Sarah Morinville’s AP Physics class attended the STEM Goes Red Conference Nov. 18 at RSP Architects in Minneapolis. The 16 students participated in hands-on learning and mentoring with leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

    MWHS Ninth Graders Build Community at Annual Respect Retreat

    Mound Westonka High School ninth graders and senior Link Crew leaders took part in the annual Ninth Grade Respect Retreat on Nov. 8 at the Westonka Activity Center. Put on by the nonprofit organization Youth Frontiers, the Respect Retreat inspires students to build a positive community where all students can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

    Grandview Seventh Graders Explore Math and Science at the Minnesota Zoo

    Over 200 Grandview Middle School seventh-grade students, along with staff and parent chaperones, put their math and science skills to work at Math Day at the Minnesota Zoo on Nov. 5. Using a workbook designed for the occasion, students used graphing, math, maps, and more to learn about zoo animals and their habitats.

    Westonka Families Enjoy SEAC Bowling Event

    Westonka’s Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) hosted a bowling event at Country Club Lanes in Tonka Bay on November 10 for district students who receive special education services and their families. The event, sponsored by the Mound American Legion, helped families connect and helped students come together in a safe and supportive environment to play and have a lot of fun.

    Westonka Establishes New Fine Arts Hall of Fame

    Westonka Public Schools has established the Westonka Fine Arts Hall of Fame (HOF), complementing the existing Athletic Hall of Fame, which was launched in 2020. The purpose of the new Fine Arts HOF is to recognize individuals with significant achievements in the arts, either as students or representatives of the district, while fostering a deeper connection between the past, present and future of the Westonka arts community.

    Grandfriends' Day is Popular Tradition at Shirley Hills Primary School

    Grandfriends’ Day is a long-standing and popular Shirley Hills Primary School tradition. Hundreds of special guests visited students on Nov. 1. The event is called “Grandfriends’ Day” to encourage students to invite a friend or neighbor if their grandparents live far away or are not able to attend the event geared at the youngsters’ older friends.

    The community is invited to the first concert series of the new VOCE Community Choir on November 16 and 17 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wayzata. VOCE Community Choir is a new adult mixed choral ensemble, directed by Mound Westonka High School choir director Kelly Newell.

    National Honor Society Hosts 'Haunt for Hunger' for WeCAN

    National Honor Society students joined the ranks of local trick-or-treaters on Halloween, but their mission was a bit more ambitious than gathering candy. The Mound Westonka High School students went house to house, asking for canned goods or cash to support Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN).
