About the Westonka School Board

The Westonka School Board serves as the governing authority for the district, and is composed of seven locally elected members who each serve four-year terms. Members of the school board are required to comply with laws and regulations enacted by the Minnesota Legislature and the Minnesota Department of Education. The board approves budgets, hires staff, provides facilities, establishes curriculum, determines policy, and generally provides for the educational needs of Westonka students.

Questions or Concerns?

Before appealing to the school board with an issue or problem, citizens are urged to contact the teacher, then the building principal, then the Superintendent of Schools in order to reach a successful closure to an individual issue. School board members may also be contacted via email with questions or concerns. If these procedures are unsuccessful, then arrangements will be made for the concerned party to formally address the school board.

Please call the board secretary at (952) 491-8007 to be placed on the agenda. Correspondence to board members may be sent to individual members or the board as a whole in care of the Superintendent of Schools, 5901 Sunnyfield Road E, Minnetrista, MN 55364.

Opportunities to Address the Board

The school board provides a specified period of time during each regular meeting where citizens may address the board. Community comment/speaker cards are available prior to each regular board meeting for anyone wishing to address the board. Citizens are encouraged to fill out one of these cards if they wish to address the board.

Community organizations that wish to address the board should designate a spokesperson and an alternate speaker. Comments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each speaker will be given three minutes, unless extended by the board. Speakers are expected to present their comments in a respectful and professional manner.

This section of the agenda provides the opportunity for board members, parents, teachers, and/or student associations and organizations to provide the school board with reports and updates on various committees.

Consent Agenda

In order for a more efficient administration of school board meetings, the board may elect to use a consent agenda for the passage of items of a similar nature or routine and recurring items requiring formal approval, such as approval of previous minutes, approval of staff contracts, or approval of various schedules. By using a consent agenda, the school board has consented to the consideration of certain items as a group under one motion.

Discussion/Action Items

The board will discuss predetermined topics and topics brought up during the meeting, and will take action on items requiring majority vote.

Individual school board members are assigned to serve on board and district committees, as board liaisons to Westonka schools and programs, and as district representatives on local and state educational organization committees and task forces.
