Seven Westonka Middle School band students participated in the South Central Minnesota Band Directors Association Honor Band at Chanhassen High School on May 2.  The event is geared toward first and second year instrumentalists.

Students worked in small like-instrument section groups as well as full band rehearsals to prepare for their concert. In less than four hours, they prepared four pieces of music under the leadership of local band directors. They performed a concert for friends and family at the end of the experience.

Participants included fifth graders Rowan Vranish, James Holland, and Tilly Tortoritis-Searl, along with sixth graders Alex Smith, Cora Connoy, Campbell Hoag, and Lola Thomas.

"This is the first year WMS has sent students to this event, and we hope it will become a yearly tradition,” said band director Gretchen Chilson. “It was a great way to recognize students who are ready to go above and beyond, and for them to work on new skills and return to our program as leaders!"
