Hilltop First Graders Celebrate Reading at 'Starbooks Cafe'

Hilltop Primary School first graders got to celebrate reading with their "Starbooks Cafe" on May 21. Students made yummy milk lattes, had cake pops, and “tasted” a fun variety of books at different stations. “We love reading!” said first grade teacher Michelle Ham.
In first grade, students build upon early literacy skills, focusing on phonics, sight words, and reading comprehension. First graders also develop basic grammar skills, like capitalization and punctuation, and become independent readers with improved comprehension skills. Activities like the “Starbooks Café” provide a fun opportunity to enhance those important skills.
