A Letter to the Class of 2025—From a Grateful Superintendent and Dad

A Letter to the Class of 2025—From a Grateful Superintendent and Dad
Kevin Borg, Superintendent

Dear Mound Westonka High School Class of 2025,

Writing this senior class letter is different than most. For the second time in my 28 years in Westonka, I’m celebrating graduation not only as an educator, but also as a dad.

As your superintendent, I’ve had the privilege of seeing you grow into leaders, artists, athletes, musicians, innovators and thinkers. As a parent, I’ve watched many of you grow up—sharing concerts, school dances, competitions, triumphs and tough moments. I’ve cheered for you from the bleachers, applauded your performances, and marveled at your persistence. And like many other parents, I’ve sat quietly at times, deeply proud of not just what you’ve done, but who you’ve become.

You’ve done it all, Class of 2025.

You’ve earned state and national accolades in academics. Twenty-one members of the Class of 2025 were recognized by the College Board for outstanding achievement on Advanced Placement exams in 2024—and many more will be recognized this summer. Two of you were honored as National Merit Finalists, and two others as Commended Students. Fifty-three members of your class competed at state in DECA during your high school careers and 16 moved on to Internationals. You led our Math League team to the state tournament in two consecutive years. And our Robotics team achieved incredible success under your leadership, including two consecutive trips to Worlds and a 2024 state championship!

You’ve been recognized for excellence in fine arts. Your creativity has been honored with Gold Key awards and Superior ratings at state art festivals. You’ve put on inspirational concerts and performed in regional music contests. Seven of you led the way to our one-act play’s first-ever state appearance, and many more earned individual Spotlight Awards for musical theater performances and technical leadership on the stage.

You’ve reached new heights in athletics—breaking records, earning medals, and showing your strength both on the field and in the classroom. You represented Westonka at state in cross country, dance, gymnastics, swim and dive, basketball, wrestling, tennis, and track and field. You earned a first-place relay medal in track last year, and the Hawkettes took home our first-ever state high kick championship in 2023. From All-State honors to Academic All-State awards, you’ve proven that you can compete with integrity and excellence.

You’ve also led—with compassion, courage and vision. You served in Student Senate and National Honor Society, took on statewide leadership roles, and guided younger students as part of Link Crew. You’ve given back to your community through service, mentorship and by being role models in every sense of the word.

But beyond all of that, what makes you truly remarkable is your spirit. You’ve faced real challenges in your time here. And together, you’ve shown what it means to be a community that lifts each other up. In the face of heartbreak, you chose to live differently. You chose to honor a classmate and friend who left this world too soon by carrying his light forward in your own lives.

You chose to Be Like Tommy.

You chose kindness. You chose joy. You chose to see the good in each other, and to share it generously. That legacy will live on long after you cross the stage at commencement.

In closing, I want to thank you. Thank you for what you’ve given to Westonka Public Schools and our community. Thank you for the example you’ve set. And thank you for showing us that excellence is more than just a long list of accomplishments—it’s how we treat one another, how we face the hard days, and how we leave things better than we found them. Wherever your path takes you from here, know that you have made us proud.

Congratulations, Class of 2025!

Sincerely,

Kevin Borg, Superintendent
