A New Strategic Direction for Westonka Public Schools

A New Strategic Direction for Westonka Public Schools

Borg Report May 15, 2026

As we look to the future of Westonka Public Schools, I’m proud to present our new strategic plan, which will go to the Westonka School Board for final approval on June 8, 2026. This plan reflects both who we are and where we are headed.

Vision

Our new vision - Empowering learners to create their own real-life success stories - was intentionally crafted to be both student-centered and aspirational.

It reflects the potential of every learner and the belief that each student’s path to success is unique, meaningful, and worthy of support. “Empowering” represents Westonka’s commitment to providing high-quality instruction, diverse experiences, and strong relationships that equip students with the skills, confidence, and agency to take ownership of their learning and futures.

Mission

Our mission speaks to the heart of Westonka: Westonka Public Schools is where small school advantages meet big school opportunities. Through a culture of innovation, educational excellence, and belonging, every learner is welcomed, challenged with high expectations, supported in exploring their interests, and empowered to achieve their full potential.

This mission is true to who we are, and it guides what we do each day.

Strategic Priorities

To bring our vision and mission to life, the board has identified five strategic priorities that will focus our work in the years ahead:

Comprehensive Student Success

Provide an exceptional learning experience that prepares all students for success after graduation.

Areas of focus:

  • Academic excellence
  • Highly effective educators
  • Competitive extracurricular and co-curricular opportunities
  • New and engaging vocational pathways

Safety and Wellbeing

Create safe, healthy, and supportive learning and working environments for students and staff.

Areas of focus:

  • Campus safety and security
  • Mental health resources and support
  • Digital citizenship and cybersecurity

Empowered and Intentional Innovation

Foster a culture of creativity and collaboration, empowering staff and students with the tools, resources, and support necessary to drive innovation and lead Westonka into the future.

Areas of focus:

  • Elevating innovative ideas
  • Innovation-focused professional development
  • Intentional integration of assistive technologies and AI

Stakeholder Engagement

Engage in meaningful communication with students, staff, families, alumni, and the broader community to become a district of choice.

Areas of focus:

  • Staff and student voice
  • Community connections and pride

Investing in Small School Advantages, Big School Opportunities

Continuously evaluate and optimize the use of financial, capital, and human resources to ensure operational excellence, support district priorities, and enhance opportunities for students and the community.

Areas of focus:

  • Strategic facilities and capital planning
  • Long-term financial planning
  • Stable enrollment growth

District leadership will set annual goals and identify supporting strategies and tactics under each of these priorities, and progress will be regularly reported to the school board. While this approach is consistent with how Westonka has historically set strategic goals, it strengthens board engagement in this process moving forward. This will help ensure that every decision we make remains grounded in what’s best for our students, while continuing to build on the strengths that make Westonka one of the top school districts in the state.
