COVID-19 Quarantine Process

  • Westonka Public Schools will be following the updated guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) regarding quarantine that were released December 7, 2020. The process outlined below applies to all school- and district-sponsored activities.

A 14-day quarantine period is recommended

If you are exposed to COVID-19, the safest option is to stay home and away from others for 14 days. However, in certain situations, you may end your quarantine after 10 days, or after seven days with a negative COVID-19 test result. You cannot end your quarantine before seven days for any reason.

    IMPORTANT:

    • If you are quarantining because someone in your household has tested positive for COVID-19, the full 14-day quarantine is still required. (The COVID-19 virus can develop up to 14 days after the last contact with a positive person.)
    • For students attending a school/program operating in the in-person learning model, the full 14-day quarantine is still required. Six feet social distancing cannot be effectively maintained between students in a fully in-person learning environment.
    • White Hawks student-athletes should refer to MDH Sports Quarantine guidance. Students requesting a shortened quarantine for return to sports must complete the Shortened Quarantine Request Form and return to District Nurse Kelly Mattson at mattsonk@westonka.k12.mn.us.

A quarantine can end after 10 days if ALL of the following apply:

    • If you are not experiencing ANY symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever of 100.4°F or higher; new cough or a cough that gets worse; difficulty/hard time breathing; new loss of taste or smell; sore throat; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; chills; muscle pain; extreme fatigue/feeling very tired; new severe/very bad headache; new nasal congestion/stuffy or runny nose)
    • If you have not tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days
    • If no one in your household has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days
    • If you continue to monitor your symptoms through day 14

A quarantine can end after 7 days if ALL of the following apply:

    • If you test negative for COVID-19 with a PCR test AFTER 5 FULL DAYS of quarantine
      • Rapid (antigen) tests ARE NOT PCR tests
      • Documentation of a PCR COVID-19 negative test is required before a student/staff member is able to return to school

Regarding testing, please remember the amount of time to receive results can vary by testing site and provider. Below is a list of the testing sites in Minnesota, as well as a link to at-home, no-cost saliva tests. Saliva tests can be ordered at any time so they are readily available if/when needed.

Students and staff members requesting a shortened quarantine must fill out the Shortened Quarantine Request Form found below and return it to district nurse Kelly Mattson or to the school health specialist. You will be notified by the Westonka Health Services Department if your shortened quarantine request is approved or denied. Please note: If schools do not have appropriate staffing, an early return-to-school request may be denied.

Who Does Not Need to Quarantine?

  • If someone has recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days and is exposed again, they do not need to quarantine if ALL of the following are true:

    • Their illness was laboratory confirmed in the past 90 days.
    • They have fully recovered.
    • They do not currently have any symptoms of COVID-19.

If someone has completed COVID-19 vaccination (two doses in a two-dose series or one dose in a one-dose series) and is exposed, they do not need to quarantine if BOTH of the following are true:

    • The COVID-19 exposure was at least 14 days after their vaccination series was fully completed.
    • They do not currently have any symptoms of COVID-19.

If either of these situations apply and you are asked to quarantine, please inform District Nurse Kelly Mattson of your exemption: (952) 491-8104 or mattsonk@westonka.k12.mn.us. Documentation may be required.

Even after a person has recovered from COVID-19 or is fully vaccinated they should still continue to stay distanced, wear a mask that fits well, wash their hands often, and follow other precautions.
