Voting Information

  • Voters in the Westonka School District will be asked to go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, to elect school board members and vote on a revoke and replace operating levy.

    Although the election itself isn’t until November, anyone who is not registered to vote may pre-register anytime through Oct. 15, and voting by absentee ballot will begin on Sept. 20 and continue through Nov. 4.

    Registering to vote

    To register to vote in Minnesota, a potential voter must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day, be a resident of Minnesota for 20 days before the election, and for this November election, be a resident of the school district. Voters can register online through the website of the Office of the Secretary of State or by mail by downloading the registration form from the Secretary of State website. The registration form can also be picked up at the Westonka Schools administrative offices, 5901 Sunnyfield Road E, Minnetrista, MN.

    Voters can also check their registration status and polling place on the Secretary of State website. After the Oct. 15 pre-registration deadline, voters can still register at the polls with proper identification when voting absentee or on Election Day.

    Absentee and early voting

    In-person absentee voting will be conducted at the Westonka Educational Service Center, 5901 Sunnyfield Road E, Minnetrista, during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from Sept. 20 through Nov. 4.

    During the last week of absentee voting, Oct. 29 through Nov. 4, absentee voters will be able to vote by “direct ballot,” meaning that they will be able to feed their ballot into a ballot counter just as is done on Election Day. Because of the popular response to direct balloting, and to better serve potential voters, the district will offer some extended early voting hours that week:

    • Tuesday, Oct. 29 - 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday, Oct. 30 - 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
    • Thursday, Oct. 31 - 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Friday, Nov. 1 - 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Saturday, Nov. 2 - 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • Monday, Nov. 4 -  7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    Early voters must fill out an Absentee Ballot Application, which is available at the school district office, on the school district website and on the Secretary of State and Hennepin County Elections website. Applications can be filled out by in-person absentee voters when they come in to vote.

    Absentee voting by mail is handled by Hennepin County. To request that an absentee ballot be sent by mail, return the absentee application to Hennepin County Elections, 300 South Sixth St., Government Center, Minneapolis, MN 55487. Applications requesting mailed absentee ballots can also be dropped off, mailed or emailed to the Westonka School District Office to be forwarded to Hennepin County Elections.

    Westonka School District 277 will be having a general election to elect four school board members for four-year terms as well as a special election on the revoke and replace operating levy. If approved, three existing operating levies would be revoked and replaced by a new 10-year operating levy with an increase. Levies provide funding for day-to-day district operating expenses such as teacher salaries, transportation costs, utilities and classroom supplies. Learn more on the Referendum Home page.
