The Westonka School Board unanimously approved changes to school start times district-wide during its regular meeting Dec. 10, citing the latest research and best practices regarding sleep patterns in adolescents.
The district arrived at the new start times, which will begin in the 2019-2020 school year, by looking at relevant research; gathering feedback from staff, students and parents; and considering logistics, such as transportation, that impact the student schedule. Starting in the fall of 2019, Westonka’s primary schools will start at 9:05 a.m. and release at 3:45 p.m., Grandview Middle School will start at 8:10 a.m. and release at 2:50 p.m. and Mound Westonka High School will start at 8:20 a.m. and release at 3:00 p.m.

American Academy of Pediatrics
Summary: Studies show that adolescents who don’t get enough sleep often suffer physical and mental health problems, an increased risk of automobile accidents and a decline in academic performance. But getting enough sleep each night can be hard for teens whose natural sleep cycles make it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 p.m. – and who face a first-period class at 7:30 a.m. or earlier the next day.

American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Summary: Delayed high school start times also were associated with reduced motor vehicle accident rates, less subjective daytime sleepiness, and lower differences between sleep durations on school and weekend nights.
-
American Psychiatric Association
Summary: Adjusting school schedules to adolescents' circadian rhythms and sleep needs benefits students' mental and physical health.

American Psychological Association
Summary: Later school start times promote adolescent well-being.
